The 2018 Michelin Guide for Restaurants in Great Britain and Ireland
There was big news in the restaurant industry yesterday with the announcement of new Michelin stars for London restaurants. The Araki is the latest British restaurant to win three Michelin stars. The Araki is a London-based sushi restaurant situated off Regent Street and was opened in 2014. The Araki joins the top-rated restaurants in the just-released Michelin Guide for 2018 for Great Britain and Ireland. The Araki, a £300-per-person, nine-seat sushi restaurant, was upgraded from two stars to three stars when the 2018 Michelin Guide was announced on 2nd October 2017.
This was not the first time that Chef Mitsuhiro Araki has earned himself a three star. His Tokyo-based restaurant had been rewarded three stars before he closed it and relocated to London where he makes sushi using European-sourced fish.
Mitsuhiro Araki challenged himself to utilize European fish and he has been producing magnificent sushi. The Araki prides itself on having all their nine seats at the chef’s table on their upmarket Mayfair venue. It is without a doubt that this restaurant has developed from strength to strength since its inception.
Araki is among other four restaurants in the United Kingdom and Ireland that earned the top honor of the Michelin Guide. Other Restaurants in London that received three starts are Gordon Ramsay and Alain Ducasse that retained their awards and Waterside Inn and Fat Duck that are situated outside London.
Boath House, a Scottish hotel located in Auldearn, retains its star not with standing their request to be stripped of the rating as they claim that all formalities involved were discouraging their local customers.
The Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Ireland for 2018 has also awarded two stars to 20 restaurants. This includes Claude Bosi at Bibendum, which started operations earlier this year at Michelin House situated in Chelsea, London. Another 150 restaurants were awarded a single star, including 17 newly established restaurants. Some of the awarded restaurants include The Wild Honey Inn, which is an Irish pub found in Lisdoonvarna, and Scotland’s Loch Bay, which is at new crofter's house on the Isle of Skye.
Some restaurants that lost their stars include Turners @ 69 in Birmingham, which lost its previous award intentionally. The restaurant has been topping the Michelin charts for 8 years. However, their greatest undoing was moving from a costly fine dining location so as to make the eatery accessible to more consumers.
The Michelin Guide has rated 1,115 guesthouses and hotels and 2,067 restaurants across Great Britain and Ireland. The Michelin Guide stated that London continues to establish itself as a topnotch destination that provides a rich, unique eating experience.
Michelin watchers who are quite keen may notice that most casual restaurants are being rewarded with stars. However, this does not mean that the judging criterion has been altered. Michelin management still insists that they have not made any changes in the selection criteria for Michelin stars.
The Michelin Guide provides a perfect reflection of what is happening on the eating out scene. Over the last 10 to 15 years, there has been a shift to more casual experiences. Michelin is happy to be at the forefront of identifying and celebrating changes in the culinary industry for many years. A Michelin Guide offers consumers the information that they need when planning to eat out.
