Best restaurants in London for grouse on the Glorious 12th
The 12th of August is not far away, and it marks the start of the red grouse shooting season in Great Britain. In a curious quirk of British law, the Glorious Twelfth does not always fall on 12th August, as English law states that the season cannot start on a Sunday! However, this year 12th August falls on a Friday, and some top London restaurants will be kicking off the weekend with some grouse-themed menus.
Tries to be first
The Jugged Hare near the Barbican is a gastro pub dedicated to serving the finest British cuisine. It aims to go “estate to plate in under 12 hours,” bringing grouse from the North Yorkshire Moors to its evening Glorious Twelfth British Game and Joseph Perrier Champagne dinner. This five-course meal includes seared Yorkshire Hare loin and, of course, roast breast and confit leg of red grouse.
Grouse for breakfast
The Cinnamon Club in Westminster is one of London’s best-loved Indian restaurants. On 12th August, enjoy a special Shikaar breakfast, including curried game mince (grouse and venison) topped with a fried egg and accompanied by Bombay spiced vegetables.

Mac & Wild used to be street food trader The Wild Game Company, but is now a new restaurant in Fitzrovia serving the best Highlands produce. To celebrate the Glorious 12th, there will be a special game menu, including roast grouse, grouse croquettes and wild boar and grouse terrine. To drink, there will of course, be Scottish whiskey – the perfect accompaniment to game.
