David and his brother Robert, alongside James and Ben, launched Eyre Brothers Restaurant in August 2001 championing Iberian gastronomy and focusing on Portuguese and Spanish traditional cuisine. Robert has subsequently moved on from a daily involvement but is still responsible for supplying all the music, which is such a feature to the ambiance in the restaurant.
In 1991, David and Mike Belben opened The Eagle - credited as the original gastropub, on Farringdon Road. Following the success of The Eagle, in 1998 David and Robert set up Eyre Bros, a delicatessen-cafe offering simple quality food, with only two stools based in Charlotte Road in Shoreditch where they met James Goff and Ben Chesterfield who were devotees of the establishment.
David and Robert were born in Mozambique, an old Portuguese colony, to their Guyanese mother and English father, growing up on a sugarcane plantation on the remote Zambezi Delta where it took two days to drive around the boundary in the company Land Rover.
David has appeared regularly on The Food Programme on Radio 4 and is also the author of Big Flavours & Rough Edges (Headline Book Publishing, 2001) which was revised in 2009 and republished by Absolute Press as The Eagle Cookbook.
